How to dress for the beginning of autumn...

One of the trickiest times of the year to dress for is the transition from high summer to autumn. It can leave you wondering what the heck is going on, one minute it’s 32 degrees and you’re burning like a fried egg on a car bonnet, and the next minute you’re a shivering wreck using your scarf as a blanket. So what do we do?!

Well, believe it or not, your wardrobe is a lot more versatile than you think. Do you own a white tee? Do you have a good pair of jeans? Do you have a lightweight jacket or shirt? Anyway, all the pieces you may not have considered, could actually play a big part in your wardrobe and actually be worn all year around. Here’s a few ideas…

The White Shirt

High Summer

For high summer, which means when it’s super warm and tropical (LOL), why not grab your white shirt, team with some jean shorts and pair with some sandals. Easy. If you don’t have jean shorts, dig out an old pair of jeans that still fit but you don’t wear, fold in half and cut to just above the knee. When cut, roll both sides up and voila you have some jean shorts. Don’t worry about the frayed edging this is good. For the shirt, roll up the sleeves so they sit just above the elbows, then if the shirt is long enough, tie up at the waist. If really warm, just leave hanging. Finally, shoes – go for some subtle espadrilles or Birkenstocks to finish.

Transition to Autumn

For the last few years September has been more or less an extension of summer, still pretty warm during the day, but maybe a little bit chilly in the evening. So take your white shirt, button-up and team with your jeans (full length this time) and finish with some closed toe sandals or trainers.

Autumn

Ok, now it’s chilly. Not arctic, but still chillier than it has been for around 4 months. Keep your white shirt on, but wear underneath a light sweater and pair with your jeans and some trainers as there’s a good chance it could rain.

Dungarees

High Summer

Dungarees are so versatile, they may make you feel like an overgrown toddler, but Dungas are so easy to wear. For high summer, I would wear with a simple vest underneath, then roll up the hems so they sit ¾ length on your legs, finally, I would finish with a colourful headband and some slides.

Transition to Autumn

Switch the vest top for a short sleeves tee and add a white shirt on top for the cooler mornings and evenings. If rain is not on the horizon, then keep your sandals on, but if it’s going to rain then swap for trainers.

Autumn

Swap your short-sleeved tee for a long sleeved one, roll down the jeans, add some trainers and finish with a cardigan or blazer. Simples.

Floral Dress

High Summer

Wear your floral dress with espadrilles and sunglasses. That’s it!

Transition to Autumn

Team your floral dress with trainers and wear a denim jacket over it for when it’s a bit cooler in the mornings and evenings.

Autumn

Add some tights and a cardigan or blazer and you’re all set to wear your gorgeous floral dress throughout Autumn.

There are so many ways you can transition your summer wardrobe to autumn, just tell me what item of clothing you’re worried about and I’ll give you a list of different ways to wear it whatever the season.
