It's a nice day for a winter wedding

Winter weddings can be a wonderland of beauty. The crisp air, the glistening snow and the colour of the sky can make for a beautiful and serene setting, however, sometimes winter weather can be unpredictable and can cause some issues, especially with clothing…. So what do you wear to a winter wedding? Here are a few of my tips…

THE BRIDE

As a bride, you want to look magical and literally glisten brighter than the snow. Being a fairly newish bride myself, I have experience in shopping for wedding dresses. A lot of experience. So if you’re looking to get married during the winter months, please see my top tips for choosing your wedding dress:

  1. Opt for something a little more covered, goosebumps don’t go well with a beautiful wedding dress!

  2. Invest in a fur bolero or stole to cover your shoulders and add a bit of dimension to your look. (the fur will also lend itself nicely if a snowy setting)

  3. Go for a block heel. If the wedding is outside it could be slippery due to the weather or snow. You’ll need something with a larger surface to balance you.

  4. Don’t be afraid to sparkle! Channel the beauty of the season with some sparkle. If you’re not a fan of the traditional veil, why not go for a diamante tiara or hair slide? This will add a winter princess feel to your look.

  5. Be comfortable. I know easier said than done, but you’ll be wearing the dress all day long, so make sure you’re comfortable and can breathe!

THE GROOM

Whether you opt for off the rail, or customer made, a winter wedding for a groom is the perfect setting. Think of all the layers you can play around with regarding your morning suit! A winter wedding will also give you the chance to get creative with your accessories and really go that extra mile…. Here are a few of my tips for you gents out there:

  1. Think of the fabric. As the setting will be quite cool, you can be cool too and opt for a tweed or wool suit.

  2. Get fitted. I would recommend going to a professional tailor even if the suit has been purchased off the rail, a good fitting suit will always make you look amazing.

  3. Be clever with colour. Make sure you think about what your future wife’s colour palette is and try to incorporate that somehow within your outfit. My husband matched his tie with my flowers!

  4. Shoes. You don’t have to go traditional with your shoes. Why not try a smart chelsea boot, perfect if the wedding is outside.

THE WEDDING GUESTS

As a wedding guest at a winter wedding, you have to think about all the aspects of the wedding when choosing your outfit. Are you going to do a lot of walking, have you checked the weather, what’s the setting going to be like? Once you’ve figured all this out, then you can start thinking of your outfit. Here are a few of my tips:

  1. Go all out. A wedding is a great occasion to really dress up. So don’t be afraid to make an effort. Try sparkle, fur, full length - Just go for it!

  2. Comfort zone. Again, you will be wearing this outfit all day so it is important you’re comfortable.

  3. Fabric. Think of the fabrics and weather they may give you sweat patches later in the evening. Fabrics like Polyester can do this so beware!

  4. Invest in a pair of fold-away pumps to pop in your clutch bag to save your feet later in the evening.

THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE / GROOM

This day will be one of the most important days for either your son or daughter and you want it to be special. A day you’ll never forget, the pressure’s on to get the right outfit you’ll always look back on with love. A winter wedding is a good chance to cover-up, so if you’re not a fan of your arms, then this is the perfect setting for you! Here are a few of my tips below:

  1. Think of your body shape and what style outfit would suit you more. For instance, if you’re petite and curvy, opt for a shift style dress to cinch you in.

  2. Fabric. Again, this is the same issue. It will be cold outside, but warm inside so I would recommend you getting a bolero/jacket you can remove in the evening.

  3. Shoes. Opt for comfort, there are some great shoes out there that provide style and comfort. Remember, you want to dance the night away!

  4. Don’t be afraid to step away from tradition. Just because you are the mother, doesn’t mean you can’t look fabulous. I’m not talking upstaging the bride, but really go for it!
